Dr. Punita's Nutrient-Rich Diet Recommendations for Iron and Vitamin Deficiency Anemia

It is to be noted and well understood that eating a healthy diet that is rich in iron, vitamin B and vitamin C is very important if you are suffering from iron and vitamin deficiency anemia. The important sources of these nutrients are nuts and seeds, beans, green leafy vegetables, meat and poultry as well as sea-food.
Dr. Punita well mentions that anemia happens when your body doesn’t have enough healthy RBCs. This condition is caused by blood loss, the destruction of red blood cells or when the body is not able to create enough red blood cells. Dr. Punita suggests that when a patient shows signs of anemia, foods rich in iron and other essential vitamins need to be given so that there is enough hemoglobin and red blood cell production. Your diet should also include food that assist your body absorb iron in a better way.

Dr. Punita well suggests that heme iron is found in seafood, meat and poultry whereas non-heme iron is found in plant foods and foods fortified with iron. It needs to be noted and well understood that your body can absorb both types of iron, but it absorbs heme iron more easily. She also mentions that the recommended daily allowance (RDA) for iron is 10 mg for men and 12 mg for women.

Dr. Punita also suggests addition of fortified foods in your diet such as fortified iron juice, fortified ready to eat cereals, foods made from fortified refined flour such as white bread, fortified pasta, foods made from fortified cornmeal, fortified white rice, and few more to add on. Some of the good sources of iron are kidney beans, chickpeas, soybeans, black eyed peas, pinto beans, black beans, peas, and lima beans. Some nuts and seeds that contain iron include pumpkin seeds, cashews, pistachios, hemp seeds, pine nuts and sunflower seeds.
In a nutshell, Dr. Punita suggests not to eat iron rich food with foods or beverages that block iron absorption. She suggests to eat iron rich good with vitamin C rich food. She also suggests to add iron rich food that contain beta carotene and eat a variety of heme and non-heme iron foods. As per her suggestion, it is also important to add food rich in folate and vitamin B12.
